The Fifteenth Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which will be held in 2020, has an important historical significance. The research project of CCICED should work closely with other departments, including the Department of Nature and Ecology Conservation of the Ministry of Environmental Protection. Meanwhile, CCICED should give full play to the guiding role of top-level design building upon the research findings of the CBD Secretariat and the Biodiversity Assessment Project, and propose new targets based on the assessment of the work of the Aichi Targets. The outcome should also incorporate Chinese elements such as the Belt and Road Initiative, Ecological Civilization and so on. In addition, the COP 15 should pay attention to the goal of sustainable use of biological diversity.

We should summarize successful experience in biodiversity conservation in China to provide references for developing countries. More attention should be paid to biodiversity conservation related to people's livelihoods. It is essential to establish a framework of international and regional laws and regulations for the conservation of marine and freshwater biodiversity. In addition, the benefit-sharing of agricultural and fishery resources should be emphasized.

Efforts should be made to evaluate the insufficiency and experiences of the current biodiversity conservation, especially the Aichi Targets. So far, the CBD Secretariat and EU have proposed some expected outcomes for the COP 15 in 2020. The reason why China has not yet proposed its own is insufficient understanding of the current situation of global and regional biodiversity conservation. This should be addressed in CCICED research. Other potential fields for CCICED SPS may include post-2020 biodiversity conservation targets, principles of sharing Chinese experience and toolkits.
